About the Department

The Department of Assamese of Panigaon OPD College was established in 1984, the same year the college came into existence. Honours (Major) in Assamese was introduced in 1992, and since then the department has been playing a vital role in promoting the study of Assamese language, literature, and culture.

The primary aim of the department is to uphold and enrich the Assamese language, traditions, and social system while encouraging students to engage in education along with co-curricular activities such as seminars, conferences, health awareness programmes, career counselling sessions, and field visits. To maintain a strong academic environment, the department adopts both traditional and modern teaching-learning methods, including the use of PowerPoint presentations and online learning tools.

Faculty members are engaged in doctoral and post-doctoral research in diverse areas of Assamese literature, autobiographies, and socio-cultural studies. Moreover, the faculty actively participate in national and international seminars, conferences, workshops, and faculty development programmes.

Student Strength & Achievements

The department has consistently maintained a healthy student strength with enrolments ranging between 250 and 326 over the last five years, though it faces a high student-teacher ratio of 99:1. Academic results reflect steady progress, with several students achieving first-class marks and securing university ranks, such as:
